For Elle Fanning, who showed up to Monday night’s Met Gala in a completely transparent Balmain gown, it was the latter. Behold: The naked dress (or in Redmayne’s case, naked suit). To understand what is happening now in the Middle East, it may be helpful to remember the dead cat. That was a favorite metaphor for Secretary of State James A. Baker III as he shuttled around the region in 1991 trying to negotiate a complicated deal. The question three decades later is whether today’s players are at that stage of the U.S.-brokered effort to negotiate a cease-fire in Gaza. Mr. Netanyahu in recent days mounted airstrikes and sent tanks into Rafah in a saber-rattling move to make clear he is serious about invading the southern Gaza city. “Part of the motivation is less to reach a deal and more to blame the other guy if it fails.

With Trump’s trial scheduled to start Monday, here is a fact check of some of Trump’s remarks. Trump’s baseless claims that Biden is secretly running the caseTrump has repeatedly claimed that the Manhattan case has been secretly orchestrated by President Joe Biden, Biden’s White House or the Biden-era federal Justice Department. Third, there is no basis for the claim that Colangelo oversees Bragg; Bragg is Colangelo’s boss. The judge ruled that Trump’s “dangerous rhetoric” threatens the integrity of the looming trial, which is scheduled to begin April 15. Here are the facts about Trump’s recent attacks against Merchan’s daughter, and how this sideshow could affect the first-ever criminal trial of a former American president. He deployed this same tactic in the New York case, but went even farther by targeting Merchan’s adult daughter, Loren Merchan. He used the image to argue that Loren Merchan and her father are biased against him. “The X, formerly Twitter, account being attributed to Judge Merchan’s daughter no longer belongs to her since she deleted it approximately a year ago,” court spokesman Al Baker said last week.

CNN —For over 140 years, Lyle’s Golden Syrup — a staple item in any British baker’s pantry — has featured a rather curious logo on its tin: a lion’s carcass surrounded by bees. The original and new packaging and logo on Lyle's Golden Syrup. Lyle's Golden SyrupThe new logo, meanwhile, gives the animal a more abstracted — and somewhat more animated — appearance. The product’s old logo will continue to be used on Lyle’s classic golden syrup tin, though its bottles and dessert toppings will all now bear the new branding. In a statement, brand director for Lyle’s Golden Syrup, James Whiteley, said that “consumers need to see brands moving with the times and meeting their current need.”The product has been a staple in the pantries of British bakers since its inception.

Opinion What Sourdough Taught Me, in the Pandemic and BeyondInside one tablespoon of active sourdough starter, the fermented culture made of flour and water used for thousands of years to leaven bread, there are billions of microorganisms. How to create a sourdough starter Repeat until bubbling with life. Add flour, water and salt. Add flour, water and salt. To avoid this exponential growth, a portion of sourdough starter is traditionally discarded at every feeding, which means there’s plenty to go around.

Opinion Domicide: The Mass Destruction of Homes Should Be a Crime Against HumanityThe widespread or systematic destruction of homes has long been a feature of modern warfare. We all understand that killing can be a murder, a war crime, a crime against humanity or an act of genocide, depending on the gravity and intention of the act. Indeed, what has happened to homes and lives in Gaza is a stand-alone crime: domicide. There is precedent for updating what we legally define as international crimes. Accountability for domicide in Gaza cannot stop with potential criminal prosecutions or declaratory judgments by courts someday in the future.

A sale to JetBlue represented a lifeline for Spirit, which faces $1.1 billion in debt maturing next year. But a federal judge in Boston scuttled that plan by ruling Tuesday that JetBlue’s $3.8 billion proposal to buy Spirit violates antitrust law. But Frontier has its own challenges and is in no position to renew merger discussions with Spirit now, Baker said. Like Spirit, JetBlue has not had a profitable year since 2019, before the pandemic. HOUSTON (AP) — Dusty Baker has retired as manager of the Houston Astros, ending an illustrious 26-year career as a big league skipper highlighted by a World Series win last season. “I’m very grateful and thankful to (owner) Jim Crane and the Houston Astros for giving me this opportunity, and to win a championship,’’ Baker told the newspaper. The Astros have scheduled a news conference for Thursday morning that Baker, Crane and general manager Dana Brown are set to attend. But if you think you see where that’s going, you will be both right and wrong; Baker’s structures are so strong and yet open that, within them, anything or its opposite may happen at any moment. “Infinite Life” (a co-production with Britain’s National Theater) gets that and more from James Macdonald, who has notably staged plays by Baker in London and by the British playwright Caryl Churchill here in New York. Indeed, “Infinite Life” most closely reminded me of Churchill’s great “Escaped Alone,” in which four women sit in a garden chatting into the apocalypse. They are all expressions of Baker’s refusal to reduce the world to a unitary lesson; “Infinite Life” offers moral philosophy but no moral. Which, by the way, is what “Daniel Deronda,” past page 152, is about — and “Infinite Life” is always.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The grit Baker Mayfield showed Tampa Bay down the stretch of his debut sure outweighed the rough start. Mayfield recovered to throw two touchdown passes without a turnover, and the Buccaneers beat Minnesota 20-17 in the season opener after three first-half turnovers by the Vikings on Sunday. “It wasn’t our prettiest effort by any means, but we finished the right way,” Mayfield said. Wonder Land. As the Republican presidential candidates start to offer something more than Donald Trump's various paybacks, President Biden figures running against 'MAGA' is his path to a second term. Images: AP/Getty Images Composite: Mark KellyDespite Donald Trump’s apparent inevitability, a baker’s dozen Republicans are hoping to become the party’s 2024 nominee for president. That is possible for any of them if the field narrows to a two-person race before Mr. Trump has the nomination sewn up. That decision day should be no later than, say, Feb. 26, the Monday following the contests in Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina.

“Strzok, at a minimum, had pronounced hostile feelings toward Trump,” Durham wrote, while quoting in a footnote previously known texts between Strzok and Lisa Page, then an FBI attorney. Witness testimony exposed the FBI’s overreliance on the dossier as it sought court approval to wiretap a former Trump campaign adviser in 2016. Mixed results over 3+ yearsBarr tapped Durham in 2019 to review the origins of the Russia probe, and the scope of Durham’s work grew over the years. Former special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation, which inherited the initial Russia probe, released a detailed accounting of Russia’s effort to interfere in the 2016 election. Mueller found no evidence of a conspiracy between the Trump campaign and Russia, but investigators documented numerous contacts between Trump associates and Russians.
On Feb. 28, top executives at Goldman Sachs staged an “investor day” to reassure shareholders that the bank would rebound after a disappointing 2022. More than a decade earlier, Mr. Solomon had purchased a multimillion-dollar beachfront home from the Discovery Land Company, which built and managed Baker’s Bay. Mr. Solomon is not just a Discovery customer. He’s also a part owner of the private company and for years has informally advised its founder — even as Goldman Sachs vied for work with Discovery. Many corporate chief executives, of course, sit on other companies’ boards of directors, but such external commitments are much less common in the heavily regulated banking industry.
There’s nothing wrong with Valentine standbys like flowers or chocolate—opt for an arrangement with staying power like the paper creations conjured by Livia Cetti of the Green Vase (we’re partial to the jet-black hollyhock) or a box of single-origin truffles courtesy of San Francisco’s Dandelion Chocolate. But to fulfill Valentine’s expectations in a less expected way, we suggest going the beauty and wellness route, particularly with products that span the color spectrum (yes, the classic reds and pinks but also canary yellow and rich amethyst and pea green too). From indulgent face creams to artful makeup palettes to a Pilates machine that tucks away, here’s a list of products that are sure to become objects of affection. Painter’s Palettes…for the FaceThanks to a bounty of TikTok and YouTube tutorials, creative experimentation with makeup is trending. So go for a painterly palette—Dior’s is a leopard-encased nod to the brand’s muse Mitzah Bricard, the ’50s-era fashion icon known for her love of all things leopard; makeup artist Jo Baker’s credit card–size versions for her new line, Bakeup, are slim but pack serious pigment payoff; and the colors in Isamaya’s rhinestone-studded, punk-rock Wild Star compact live up to its moniker.

LONG BEFORE Akash Niranjan and his wife, Marissa, bought their 1936 house, it had been remodeled to within an inch of its original character. Theirs was one of the many Tudor Revival homes built in downtown Seattle in the 1930s, but unlike many of those, it was “missing the sense of charm that traditional Tudor style homes have,” said Mr. Niranjan. Period details such as leaded glass windows, wood paneling, exposed ceiling beams, crown moldings and fireplaces had disappeared from the 2,500 square-foot house.
